Epispadias in Children – Expert Care by Dr. Prabhu Karunakaran, Pediatric Urologist in Hyderabad
What is Epispadias?
Epispadias is a rare congenital condition where the urethral opening is located on the upper side of the penis in boys or abnormally positioned in girls. It affects normal urination and, in some cases, bladder function. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing long-term complications.
Types of Epispadias
- Glandular Epispadias: The urethral opening is near the head of the penis.
- Penile Epispadias: The urethra is positioned along the shaft of the penis.
- Complete Epispadias: The opening extends through the entire length of the penis or affects the bladder in girls.
Causes & Risk Factors
Epispadias occurs due to incomplete urethral development during fetal growth. It is often associated with bladder exstrophy, a more severe congenital abnormality where the bladder is exposed outside the body.
Symptoms of Epispadias

- Difficulty controlling urine flow (incontinence).
- Short, broad, or curved penis.
🚼 In Girls
- Abnormally placed urethral opening.
- Widened clitoris or split labia.
- Urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence.
Difficulty with sexual function later in life.
